Something to start doing
Right Now!
This new change to the tax rules demonstrates one of those things you cannot try to handle next April. You have to start on this as soon as possible to make sure you get your fair share of consideration later.

The IRS is no longer accepting undocumented write-offs for contributions and donations, including such as church collection-plates and the like. Either pay with a check or be prepared to submit clear bank record proof. This pretty much drops the current $250 receipt requirement down to zero dollars. You might also want to keep in mind that the organization has to be a charity as defined by IRS. (more...)

Unscrupulous credit counseling organizations put you at risk
“Over a period of years, tax-exempt credit counseling became a big business dominated by bad actors.” -- IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson.

Although many credit counseling organizations provide valuable services to persons who find themselves in debt, the IRS is concerned that some have used their tax-exempt status to circumvent consumer protection laws and take advantage of those who are already in financial distress.

In May of 2006, Internal Revenue Service officials released a report on tax-exempt credit counseling agencies and announced further steps to ensure these organizations comply with the law.

Over the preceeding two years, the IRS had been auditing 63 credit counseling agencies, representing more than half of the revenue in the industry. The audits of 41 organizations, representing more than 40 percent of the revenue in the industry, have been completed. All of the completed audits have resulted in revocation, proposed revocation or other termination of tax-exempt status. here's a list of the current revocations: Recent Revocations of 501(c)(3) Determinations .

That's what the IRS discovered: every one of the 41 they reviewed ended up loosing its status as a credit counseling organization. This is a huge red flag for you to keep in mind should you decide to seek credit counseling services.

We suggest that the best way to avoid being duped by such hussles is to develop good financial practices in the first place. That's where we can help. (more...)
